Munich Hotel
Base for Cricket Team
Cricket is not exactly a huge
sport in Germany, but we were having a great time touring
around and playing some of the local teams. We had just
arrived in Munich after already having played in Berlin and
Hamburg. Our Hotel Munich (Hotel München) was fantastic and we really
felt at home here right away. There was a great gym
and swimming pool here, but more importantly a well stocked
bar and a great restaurant. Munich was going to be our
base for about a week while we played two one day cricket
matches with a couple of the local teams in the Munich
competition.
Travelling all the way from
England to Germany for a cricket tour may seem a little
strange, but a couple of our team members had family here and
organising the matches and the tour was made easy for us with a
few connections in place. It was a great excuse for a
holiday in Germany as well, and a lot of use were especially
looking forward to spending a little time in Munich.
The game of cricket is growing in Germany but
it is not exactly catching the nation by storm just
yet. Football is huge in Germany and motor sport
also has a huge following here, however cricket is not
even on the radar. The German national team rank
37th in the world and are equal with teams like the
Bahamas and Mozambique. This gives a useful
comparison of where cricket sits in the national German
psyche. The game is played here however, and we have
found some great competition with the local teams.
While it is true that our little English county team is
not the most successful team around, we have managed to
have some competitive games here with some worthy
opposition. Our next game is not for three days,
which gives us all a good opportunity to explore Munich
and the facilities of this fantastic Hotel Munich (Hotel München) where we are
staying.
It is nice to stay in a
centralised hotel when you are in a new city, that way you
don't have to deal with public transport and the many headaches
that it can bring. Munich is a great city to just walk
around as there is some amazing architecture here and a good
overall atmosphere in most parts of the city. Some of the
team are feeling the weight of culture and want to check out
the galleries and museums tomorrow, while others are keen just
to hit the shops and the beer halls before having to worry
about the next game. Having this great hotel will allow
us to split up and go our own ways if we want to, and meet up
later for a meal and a drink together. I am sure that
this cricket tour to Germany will last long on every body's
memories, it may even be something we will tell our grand kids
about in the years to come.
